MAAA Wingspan - Quarterly Magazine
11 AUGUST WING SPAN MAAALogo. “The organisers were tasked to integrate electric F5J models in a different manner for this year’s event. So it was a bit of an experiment, which was semi-successful.” As a result of this, on Friday only F5J flyers were permitted, which experienced the best participation with about 45 entries. Then on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, the F5J was separated from open thermal, where fliers could only participate in one class. “We had about 28 pilots fly open thermal and 29 who flew F5J over the weekend, so it reduced the numbers in both of those events,” Mike reflected. “Probably on that basis, the experiment didn’t work quite so well. As a consequence, at this event’s general meeting, it was decided that we’d do it differently next year.” The winner of open thermal 2019 was Nick Chabrel (pictured with his Pike Dynamic glider), with Joe Wurts securing first place for both F5J and F3K.
