12 WING SPAN NOVEMBER 11-YEAR-OLD ZIPPING SKYWARD AGAINST WORLD ELITE PILOTS While most of his classmates are busy playing video games, 11-year-old, Rhys Wyatt is making a name for himself across the globe as he zips skyward with his model helicopter, reaching speeds of 160 kms an hour. Since starting out at the young age of four, the Newcastle local and Rebel Flying Club member has gained his wings and competed against some of the world’s most elite athletes in the sport some twice his age, showcasing his high-level of skill, precision and agility. With his own YouTube channel, Rhys has developed quite a following across the helicopter flying community. The easing COVID-19 restrictions have given him a chance to dust off the helicopter blades and head to his local flying field at Ash Island, Hexham once more. “Dad got me into helicopters when I was four-years-old. I loved going out to the flying field and being able to meet new people, showing people my skill and learning from others,” he said. “I’ve not been able to fly at our field because of the restrictions, but now that they have eased, I will be back at the field flying again- I can’t wait. “I also created my own YouTube channel, as I wanted people to see that it doesn’t matter what age you are, or how young you are, anyone can fly helicopters. “I think with a lot of persistence and faith in yourself, you can do well in whatever sport you put your mind to.” Rhys’ Father, Murray Wyatt said before the restrictions were put in place, Rhys was practicing his flying twice a week- all day Saturday and Sunday- as well as practicing on the simulator on the computer. “Flying model helicopters have not only built Rhys’ confidence, but it’s taught him a valuable lesson that you can achieve anything you put your mind to if you practice,” he said.
