MAAA Wingspan

03 MAAALogo. NOVEMBER WING SPAN MAAA EXECUTIVE president’s report It is with much sadness that since my last communication, we have lost perhaps one of our best-known aeromodellers, Brian Winch. Brian died in August, aged 82. Brian was not only well known in Australia but worldwide, renowned for his many articles in aeromodelling magazines such as Airborne, Radio Control and Electronics (RCME) and Flat Out, to name a few. I never met Brian personally; however, I read many of his articles. Brian was affectionately known to his friends as “Oily”. When trying to solve issues with my I.C. aircraft, Brian’s articles were the first place I looked. He had the “knack” of writing articles the layman and bunnies (me) could understand. Like me, many will miss Brian’s articles however, I understand Andrew Sill, publisher and editor of Flat Out magazine, has a catalogue of Brian’s articles and will be placing these online for all to read. To quote from an article in the November edition of RCME, Brian was “a real modeller and a global ambassador for the hobby” I concur with those words. In recognition of his contribution to aeromodelling and aeromodelling journalism, Brian was inducted into the MAAA Hall of Fame in 1993. On behalf of all MAAA members, our condolences are passed to his family and friends. Brian will be sadly missed. Rest in Peace Oily. Unfortunately, too many of our passionate aeromodellers are passing to the flying fields in the sky. While on the topic of modelling magazines, well sort of, I hear that Flat Out magazine is producing its last edition in November. The trend today is to get all one’s entertainment online, and the print media just cannot compete.
