MAAA Life Member Award: Kevin Dodd In 1998, Kevin joined the revamped MAAQ as PRO under Jeffery Phillips as President and Ian Gillespie as Treasurer. The Secretary at the time went missing in action, so he was asked to fill this position until the next AGM. He was elected as MAAQ Secretary in 1999. First time on MAAA Council, Kevin remained in the position of MAAQ Secretary until September 2007 stepping down at the AGM due to being appointed and taking up the MAAA Secretary position In June 2007. During involvement with MAAQ, the Executive introduced measures to include all QLD clubs within the MAAQ Processes with the assistance of members of Far NQ accepting MAAQ committee positions. He introduced MAAQ meetings away from Brisbane to include other clubs in QLD. Kevin worked with the Bundaberg club, Police and Organisers to safely and successfully hold the 2001 F3D World Championships. In May 2007, Kevin was elected MAAA Secretary under Mike Close as President. Major items dealt with in the immediate years were the introduction of 2.4GHz into the MAAA system. He organised new Membership System to replace the one used at the time which would not run beyond 2010. Implementation took several years to manage. Kevin provided initial directions with Part 149 involvement. Kevin maintained key operations of the association and guided 2012/13 Paul Winter when he was elected MAAA President in 2012/13 year and not long after welcomed the current president from his VP role to the President role which he is still undertaking today. Kevin continued as the key MAAA Personnel for the remainder of this service in the MAAA Secretary role. Other aspects of the association which were introduced included: - Marketing Assistance and guidance - Member Magazine “Wingspan” - CAS and - Insurance aspects for club infrastructure; Kevin also became CIAM/FAI delegate during his role and in 2017 was voted in as CIAM Technical Secretary, a position he still holds today as the only Executive Member on the CIAM Bureau outside of Europe. In November 2018, Kevin retired from MAAA as Secretary but has continued to work in the Aeromodelling space with the Richmond Valley Council NSW to advance model aviation and has gained access to the Casino Airport. He and the current MAAA Secretary have established a five-year CASA Instrument of operation for the airport with many future events planned to include the recently awarded 2023 FAI F3A World Championships for aerobatic model aircraft. Kevin has also continued to provide advice where requested on property purchases and will continue to do so on request from the MAAA Council.
