MAAA Wingspan

22 23 Due to COVID-19, this event was exclusively open to MAAA Members and families. The Open Day was organised as a way to connect members to one and another as well as give them an opportunity to fly. As well as being able to fly throughout the day, there was a BBQ put on for members as well. SAAMBR President Greg Petherick said usually the clubs open day invites the wider community but this year couldn’t because of COVID-19 restrictions. “Usually the public open day sees a large number of people attending and many new member sign ups,” he said. “This year however, it had to be restricted. The outcome of the event was that about 80-90 pilots attended, with about 30 family members- so still a great success.” SAAMBR is one of Australia’s largest and oldest model aeroplane clubs. They have been operating for more than 53 years. In November 2009, members from the Pine Rivers Aeronautical Model Society Inc (PRAMS) and the Wamuran Model Airplane Club joined up to create the Sports Aeromodellers Association Moreton Bay Region Inc. “The club has faced some hard times these past few months, and we are working closely with the council to ensure the future success of the club,” said Greg. The club is looking ahead with a five year plan. They currently hold and maintain the use of two fields. This allows them to hold a competition at one field, and members who do not want to participate can still utilise the facilities at the other field. They are looking forward to expanding in the years to come. With COVID-19, the club has pulled through with financial help from the Moreton Bay Council. They maintain a close relationship with the council and have recently been granted a 50 thousand dollar grant to build a new toilet block. Working closely with the council is essential to the club’s success. “We are going to hold another open day late in November. The event will include a BBQ and will be exclusively for MAAA members,” he said.
