Queensland. The F5D team also won accolades by achieving 2nd place overall. I was unable to attend the event however, I understand all those involved achieved a marvelous result. I am not only referring to those who participated but also the unsung members who worked tirelessly behind the scenes for many months to ensure these results were achieved. Well done to all. Once again, I raise the topic of safety, with electric powered aircraft. There have been two recent incidents involving serious injuries from electric model aircraft. Both involved experienced modelers, complacency being the cause. In our experience, our new members, in most cases seem to avoid these types of accidents, long term modelers however tend to become too familiar with their equipment and take short cuts. Remember, there are no short cuts when playing with model aircraft engines, whether they be electric or I.C. powered. The problem with electric motors is that they continually keep biting until the power source is removed. Notwithstanding the fact we have cut off switches on our transmitters and other devices designed to isolate the battery from the motor, nothing beats DISCONNECTING THE BATTERIES OR REMOVING THE PROPELLORS before doing any maintenance or retrieving the model from the field. On the topic of safety, you may all now be aware that the MAAA has requested all state associations to appoint a dedicated safety officer. The MAAA takes safety of members seriously and promotes a positive safety culture. The role of the Safety Officer is not to be the association fun policeman, the role to collate incident information, identify trends and provide advice to your State Executive and when requested provide safety advice to club officials. Until next time, Safe Flying, enjoy your flying and most of all enjoy the club camaraderie. Neil Tank President 04 president’s report CONTINUED...
