MAAA Wingspan - Quarterly Magazine

03 MAAALogo. AUGUST WING SPAN MAAA EXECUTIVE president’s report The winter months are quickly slipping by and soon we will be into the days where flying conditions and sunny days are the norm. On reflection though, we are luckier in Australia than our counterparts in the Northern Hemisphere where during winter, they put their aircraft in the hangars to hibernate. Our competitive modelers have been active over the past few months. The F9U (FPV Drone Racing) trials for the 2019 World Championship was recently conducted in Victoria. Congratulations to all who participated and those who have been selected to compete in the championships - to be held in China later this year. As you all remember, in the 2018 event, our Australian team were overall winners and our Rudi Browning was crowned the 2018 FAI World Drone Racing Champion. Let’s hope the 2019 team can achieve similar results. We must remember though; it is not all about winning, it is about participation and enjoyment. Whilst on the topic of “FPV Drone racing”, a special interest group has been formed in accordance with MAAA MOPs to coordinate national MAAA and FAI FPV “drone” racing events. This group consists of a member from each State and will work with the MAAA to establish a solid base in Australia. According to the FAI, drone racing is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Australian competitors in the past have shown they are as good as and if not, better than our overseas counterparts. The establishment of the Special Interest group will ensure our standing in the world continues. One FPV drone event that may generate some interest in Australia is the newly FAI introduced Drone Soccer Event. For more information on this go to https://www.fai.org/drone-sports- soccer The F3D (I/C) and F5D (Electric) Pylon FAI World Championships were conducted in Maryborough Queensland during August. This event attracted pylon racers from around the globe. Congratulations to F3D MAAA member, Chris Callow for winning his sixth world championship. Congratulations to the Australian F3D team for gaining 1st Place and thus world champions honors. Junior F3D World champion went to Matthew Wood from President: Neil Tank The MAAA are always keen to hear about your successes or story ideas for Wingspan.
