17 MAAALogo. “It was quite a thrill seeing my ten- year-old son be a part of it all and getting to witness multiple events at one location and the vibe and the energy that comes from all that,” said Brett. “He had never experienced the Nationals before and for him to be a part of it and to experience the indoor and control line stunts, along with the large scale aerobatics and various other categories that we don’t normally see at our home field, was truly fantastic.” In a continuation of the classic tradition of aeromodelling fun, competition and camaraderie, the 71st Nationals will naturally bring back all these popular flying elements. This includes the aforementioned, time-honoured ‘free for all’ night scramble and the NSW Free Flight Society’s subsequent barbecue on the AB field. The 71st Nationals will also see the floodgates open up to non-competitors too, as event coordinator Terry Bond reveals. “The Nationals was always designed for people to compete, with an emphasis on that competition aspect, however, for the 71st event we’ve added a bit of a daily ‘fun fly’ element,” he said. “Non-competitors will now be given a place to fly their aeroplanes too. For example, we will organise for flyers from the three main disciplines to fly inside the stadium and have a ‘fun fly indoor session’ on a daily basis.” There’s no doubt the positive vibes are set to continue, ensuring that the 71st MAAA National Model Aircraft Championships will be an equally memorable event for one and all. The 71st MAAA National Model Aircraft Championships will take place 24 April – 1 May.
