MAAA Wingspan

18 19 Year 11 Aerospace Systems students from Mueller College made and tested their Delta Darts during Term One. The Delta Darts were built in conjunction with their Unit 1 - Introduction to Aerospace Systems and Structures folio. This required them to research and analyse model aircraft to determine which was the most efficient to teach aeronautics and associated principals to school aged students. Most students had never built model aircraft before, except for paper planes, and the build and test flight enabled them to grow their knowledge of aerodynamics, wing dihedral, propulsion, trimming and balance. This helped the students test how durable the planes were and how easy they were to repair following a crash landing. The Delta Darts provided usable data and photos that they were then able to include in their folios. The students thoroughly enjoyed the build process and the thrill of the test flight experience. The remainder of the kit will be used during the year by our younger MUROC (flying Club) students to encourage them to choose STEM and Aerospace Systems classes in future years. The annual MAAA survey has once again given us some very useful insight into your experiences with us, your Club and fellow aeromodellers. The overall satisfaction with MAAA, state organisations and Clubs has increased since last year’s survey, which is very encouraging to see. Most comments made were complimentary with some of the highlights being: • MAAA’s COVID safe plans and communications • Wingspan, member communication and effective public relations initiatives • Club assistance scheme helping to upgrade Club facilities • Purchasing of flying fields • Advisory and financial support for Clubs • Wings program • Insurance We received some great suggestions and requests fromour members, which we are looking at delivering over the next 12 months. Some of these include: • Assistance with grassroots marketing to help Clubs promote themselves and growmembership numbers • Moremarketing targeting younger members • Preparing templates for crises such as COVID safe plans that Clubs can refer to • Assisting withmore training resources across some Clubs • The development of education and ‘how to guides on how to run a successful Club • More transparency on advocacy works that MAAA undertakes with CASA on their behalf Stay tuned for member updates and articles in Wingspan in the coming months about the ways the MAAA will continue to improve its services for all Clubs andmembers. The MAAA thanks all members who took the time to complete the survey, giving us the opportunity to find new and improved ways to support our Clubs andmembers. delta darts at mueller college You Spoke, We Listened MAY WING SPAN MAAALogo. AN OVERVIEW OF THE MAAA ANNUAL SURVEY Quote 1 “Model aircraft flying is a great way to meet fellow flyers and friendly, helpful people. Information and knowledge sharing is great. Although computer-based games are popular, I believe there is nothing like the real thing! The liability coverage is also a great thing given today’s outlook re- possible damages. I can go to a property owner with the reassurance of insurance coverage as long as CASA regulations are respected. This has and will help me find new slope soaring sites. Thanks MAAA!” Quote 2 “Our Club has been quite active in promoting aeromodelling to the public through our come and try days as well as doing some advertising in the local press of events that might be happening, and also doing a number of static displays at local fairs and Christmas functions, all this has resulted in a steady stream of newmembers, both senior and to a lesser extent junior, all of which have managed to replace those who have left the area and maintained our good level of membership.” Quote 3 “with more youngsters interested in drone racing, this is a good opportunity for Clubs to grow their membership. It would be great / also help if more Clubs ran short courses for beginners. With model flying and drones the initial learning curve is very steep - even the simple things look complicated and programs helping newbies in setup and training will go a long way to growmembership.” Some comments from respondents...
